Remove metadata from a Midjourney export
Midjourney is not the ChatGPT case. A signed Content Credentials manifest is the wrong thing to expect on every download. Start from the report on the file you saved. Strip the lines that are actually there. A platform can still label the picture after that.
Cleans metadata in your browser. SynthID and TrustMark stay in the pixels. A cleaned file does not force Instagram to drop a label.

Do it in the tool, in this order
- Drop the JPEG, PNG, or WebP you will actually publish. Try sample only shows what a report looks like.
- Set the mode to All metadata.
- Press Inspect only if you want to look. Press Clean this file to strip. The same press re-scans the result, and the After column is that new scan of the cleaned bytes.
- Press Download cleaned image. Upload that file. The name ends in
-cleaned.
Which file you saved
The file from the Midjourney site, a batch ZIP from that site, a Discord CDN preview, and a screenshot of the grid are four different containers. Write-ups of site downloads have described unsigned metadata: a description that packs the prompt and parameters, an author or username, a job id, a creation time, and an IPTC DigitalSourceType such as trained algorithmic media. The same write-ups say that package is not a C2PA manifest. Other files, especially older saves and previews, show nothing a metadata scanner can list.
Those descriptions are not a promise about the next file you download. Midjourney does not owe this page a stable sidecar. Press Inspect only on the bytes you will publish. Try sample loads our demo image, not your job.
Why the tool opens on strip-all
AI provenance mode removes C2PA, Content Credentials XMP, DigitalSourceType when it appears in XMP or IPTC the
scanner treats as AI, and known AI text such as a PNG parameters chunk. It keeps ordinary EXIF on
purpose, including a description that does not sit in an AI-flagged segment. A prompt packed into a plain EXIF
description can survive that mode.
Strip-all drops the EXIF, XMP, IPTC, and C2PA categories the report knows how to rewrite, and it leaves the image payload. That is the right first clean when the goal is “the download should not still contain the prompt and the job id.” If you would rather keep a camera-style EXIF block and only clear AI lines, switch the mode to AI provenance, run it, and read the After column before you download. If EXIF or IPTC is still listed, you have not finished.
Privacy EXIF is the other pass that drops GPS, camera EXIF, IPTC, and C2PA together. Use it when the file is a photograph you also edited, and the map pin matters. The delivery write-up is metadata before client delivery. The EXIF tool owner is remove EXIF.
A missing C2PA chip is not a broken strip
If Inspect shows no C2PA line, this file has no manifest for remove C2PA to delete. Do not re-export the image through a converter hoping a manifest will appear so you can remove it. An empty credential line is the finding.
ChatGPT downloads are the opposite shape: OpenAI documents a C2PA manifest plus SynthID. That job is
ChatGPT image metadata. Local Stable Diffusion PNGs are a third shape, a
parameters or workflow text chunk:
Stable Diffusion PNG metadata. The vocabulary for the signed
manifest, when a file actually has one, is
what Content Credentials are.
Labels after you post
Nothing on this page removes a pixel watermark, and nothing here claims Midjourney files are free of one. Nothing here forces Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, or LinkedIn to stay quiet. They can label media they classify, media you disclosed, and media that still carries a signal this scanner does not list. If you upload the verified download and AI info remains, follow why Instagram still shows AI info and stop cycling quality settings.
One export is free. Several jobs in one ZIP use the batch unlock. The image stays in the browser for the strip.
Questions
Does Midjourney put C2PA in the download?
Treat that as a question about your file. A C2PA chip means yes for this container. No chip means there is no manifest here to remove. Do not borrow the ChatGPT answer.
Can the prompt still be inside the file?
Yes, on downloads that embed it as unsigned EXIF or IPTC. Inspect lists it when this scanner sees it. Strip-all is the mode that clears ordinary EXIF and IPTC, not only AI-flagged XMP.
Will Instagram drop the label?
No guarantee. A clean metadata report is not a switch on the live post, and a new upload can still be labeled from a signal outside the file.
Which mode, if I already ran AI provenance?
Read the After report. Remaining EXIF or IPTC means switch to strip-all and verify again before you download.
Clean the file, then publish that download
Use the tool above. Download only after the After report matches the tags you meant to remove.

Questions people ask
Does Midjourney embed C2PA Content Credentials?
Do not assume it does. Public descriptions of Midjourney downloads disagree, and a signed C2PA manifest is not what most of those reports describe. Inspect the file. If there is no C2PA chip, there is no C2PA manifest for this tool to remove.
Where do the prompt and job id live if they are present?
On downloads that include them, they have been described as unsigned EXIF or IPTC: a description containing the prompt and parameters, an author or username, a job id, and sometimes IPTC DigitalSourceType. Older files, previews, and screenshots often have none of that. The report on your file is the list that matters.
Will stripping a Midjourney image stop Instagram from labeling it?
No. Cleaning metadata does not force Instagram, Facebook, or any other app to drop a label. If the After report is already clear and a new upload is still labeled, the signal was not these tags.
Which mode should I use?
Inspect first. If the only hits are AI XMP or DigitalSourceType, AI provenance can clear those and leave unrelated EXIF. If a prompt is still listed under EXIF or IPTC after that pass, switch to strip-all. Privacy EXIF also drops EXIF, IPTC, XMP, and C2PA, and it is the privacy-oriented pass.
