What else is in this file
Fujifilm X and GFX cameras write an image counter into each RAF and JPEG. The reader shows it, labelled as an image counter, with the limits that come with it.
Read this before you trust the number
- It is an image counter. Fujifilm does not store a separate shutter counter that ExifTool can read.
- It may reset to 0 after a firmware update, according to ExifTool. A low number on a camera that has been updated proves little.
- The maximum shown is 32,767, because ExifTool reads it as a 15-bit value.
For a used Fujifilm, the counter is one clue among several: the seller’s history, the firmware version, and the physical condition of the body.

Older X-series and FinePix models are not on the list; their files in our samples had no counter.
Where Fujifilm stores the counter
Fujifilm writes the counter into its maker notes as tag 0x1438, which ExifTool names ImageCount. The
tag is 16 bits wide; ExifTool ignores the top bit and keeps the lower 15 bits. ExifTool’s own note on the tag: “may
reset to 0 when new firmware is installed”.
Real readings from our test files
These public-domain RAFs were read by the tool on this page and by desktop ExifTool 13.59. Both gave the same numbers.
| Test file (CC0, raw.pixls.us) | Model | Reader result |
|---|---|---|
_AFXT2721.RAF | X-T3 | 3,851 |
DSCF0268.RAF | X-T4 | 241 |
DSCF0734.RAF | X100V | 734 |
The X100V file is DSCF0734 and its counter reads 734. A file number can be reset and the counter may reset after a firmware update, so neither proves how much the shutter was used.

How we verified Fujifilm
33 Fujifilm sample files from 30 X and GFX models (JPEG and RAF) were read in the browser engine and with native ExifTool 13.59; every number matched.

Shutter count questions
Is the Fujifilm number a real shutter count?
Not exactly. Fujifilm cameras store an image counter (ExifTool calls it ImageCount). ExifTool does not describe it as a shutter count, and notes that it may reset to 0 when new firmware is installed.
Can the counter go above 32,767?
ExifTool reads this counter as a 15-bit value, so the largest number it can show is 32,767. If a camera may have taken more frames than that, the number on screen does not tell you the full total.
Does it count electronic-shutter frames?
ExifTool’s notes do not say which shutter frames are included, so we do not claim either way. Comparing two recent photos taken a known number of frames apart shows how your body counts.
RAF or JPEG?
Either, as long as it is the original file from the card. Fujifilm RAF and JPEG files are both verified.
Is the file uploaded?
No. The RAF or JPEG is read in your browser.
