Tap the chip, then decide which Story you made
On a Story that is already up, tap AI info if the viewer shows it. Meta uses that label for
industry-shared signals and for self-disclosure, and some lighter AI edits only appear from the menu. Stickers,
music, and polls sit on top of the frame. They do not rewrite the media Instagram stored, and there is no
Settings page that hides the chip while the Story stays published.
A Story built by resharing a feed post reuses that post. Clean the post’s still, then publish a new Story from
the -cleaned download. A Story built from the camera roll starts from a file you can Inspect. If
that file is a Photoshop or Lightroom export, try a fresh export with Content Credentials off, Inspect it, and
Clean only when the report still lists C2PA or AI. Video Stories and Reels are outside this cleaner.
A Story is not a feed post
Searchers who want to remove an AI label from an Instagram Story often follow a feed-post
tutorial and then watch the badge stay. The surfaces differ. A feed post keeps a permanent media object. A Story
disappears, uses a tall canvas, and is easy to build by resharing something you already published. Instagram also
transcodes Story media for playback. That transcode can drop ordinary EXIF while leaving Instagram’s own label
decision untouched.
The feed workflow stays on
how to remove AI info from an Instagram post. Use this
page when the badge is on the Story ring, the Story viewer, or a Story you are about to publish from the camera
roll. The tool underneath is the same in-browser metadata cleaner.
Three ways a Story gets an AI label
You upload a still that already contains provenance. ChatGPT, Gemini, Firefly, Midjourney
exports, Photoshop Generative Fill, and similar tools often write C2PA Content Credentials or AI XMP into the
PNG or JPEG. You crop it to 9:16, save it, and add it as a Story. Instagram can read those tags on ingest. This
is the case a metadata cleaner can actually affect, and only before upload.
You reshare a feed post. “Add this post to your Story” does not create a fresh file on your
phone with editable EXIF. The Story points at media Instagram already stored. If that post shows AI info, the
Story can show it too. Strip tags on a laptop copy, then publish a new post and a new Story from the cleaned
file. Rewriting the old post in place is not available.
You used Instagram’s own AI tools. Restyle, backdrop, and other in-app generative edits are
applied inside Meta’s apps. The label is Meta’s record of that edit. Downloading a preview, stripping metadata,
and re-uploading does not reliably clear a label that Instagram attached because you used its tool. Treat that
as out of scope. The boundary is spelled out on
what is possible and what is not.
Clean the file before you add it
1
Save a still, not a screen recording
Export JPEG, PNG, or WebP. A screen recording of the Story editor is a video, and this cleaner does not
open video. An iPhone HEIC works directly and comes back as a clean JPEG. Keep the pixels you want viewers to see;
the tool does not crop to 9:16 for you.
2
Run AI provenance, then read the after report
On the tool below, leave the mode on AI only (AI provenance) unless you also need GPS removed. Press
Clean this file. You want the C2PA / AI lines cleared on the after scan. Camera EXIF can remain in this mode.
That is intentional: a Story label and a map pin are different problems. GPS steps are in
clean EXIF and AI metadata.
3
Add the download from the camera roll
Move the cleaned file to the phone and create the Story from that file. Heavy stickers are fine for design.
They are not a metadata strategy. If you then run Instagram’s AI restyle on top, you have left the “clean
file” path and entered the in-app path.
Stickers, text, and music do not hold C2PA
Story text, polls, links, music stickers, and GIFs are overlays. They do not store the JPEG APP11 manifest, the
PNG caBX chunk, or the WebP C2PA chunk. Removing a song sticker will not clear AI info. Drawing a
doodle over the frame will not clear it either, because Instagram has already decided about the underlying media.
Close Friends and the public Story tray use the same media. Limiting the audience does not strip provenance.
Highlighting a Story to your profile keeps that media around longer. If the label is wrong for what you want on
your profile, fix the file and publish a new Story before you add the Highlight.
When the Story is already up
You cannot open a live Story and delete only its embedded XMP. Delete the Story. If the source was your own file,
clean that file, verify, and publish again. If the source was a reshare of a labeled post, fix or replace the
post first, then make a new Story from the cleaned still. If you have already posted the Story and the verify
report on your original file was clean before upload, the badge is not a leftover EXIF field. Use the
label-stays checklist.
Screenshots of Stories. A screenshot you took of someone else’s Story is your image, usually
without their C2PA. Re-uploading that screenshot can still be labeled if Instagram matches it to media it
already classified, and it is a poor way to handle someone else’s work. This guide is for files you created
and plan to publish yourself.
Formats and honest limits
- Supported stills: JPEG, PNG, WebP, cleaned in the browser. Nothing uploads for the strip.
- Out of scope: Story video, Reels, Live, SynthID, TrustMark, and any promise that the badge will be gone.
- Reshares and in-app AI edits: the label is Instagram’s, not a tag in the camera-roll file.

wording Meta used before “AI info”, read
