How to clean EXIF and AI metadata from an image

EXIF tells a story about the camera and, often, the place. AI metadata tells a story about how the picture was made. They sit in different parts of the same file. Cleaning “the meta” means choosing which story you want gone, then verifying the bytes you will actually share.

Cleans metadata in your browser. SynthID and TrustMark stay in the pixels. A cleaned file does not force Instagram to drop a label.

Strip mode

1 image free in this browser · Pro $9.99 one-time unlocks unlimited cleans + batch ZIP · How to use

Do it in the tool, in this order

  1. Drop the JPEG, PNG, or WebP you will actually publish. Try sample only shows what a report looks like.
  2. Set the mode to All metadata.
  3. Press Inspect only if you want to look. Press Clean this file to strip. The same press re-scans the result, and the After column is that new scan of the cleaned bytes.
  4. Press Download cleaned image. Upload that file. The name ends in -cleaned.

Match the mode to the layer you mean

Clearing GPS does not clear an AI info chip. Clearing C2PA in AI provenance mode does not clear GPS. The mode buttons are the whole decision: provenance keeps ordinary camera EXIF, privacy removes GPS and camera fields and also drops C2PA, and strip-all removes every category the report listed. The tool on this page opens on strip-all because this query is both layers. Switch it if you only want one.

Photoshop and Lightroom can write Content Credentials at export. Turn that include option off, export JPEG or PNG, and press Inspect only. If the report is already empty of C2PA, AI, and GPS, you are done. HEIC is decoded in your browser and returned as a clean JPEG (the page says so). A screenshot usually has none of the original camera EXIF, which is a different file from the export you think you cleaned.

EXIF and AI metadata are different layers

A single JPEG can carry both. APP1 Exif holds camera make, timestamps, and GPS. APP11 or another segment can hold a C2PA JUMBF manifest. APP1 XMP can hold Content Credentials pointers and IPTC DigitalSourceType. PNG splits the same ideas across eXIf, caBX, and text chunks. WebP uses RIFF chunks named for EXIF, XMP, and C2PA. Deleting one layer does not automatically delete the others.

That split is why “remove AI metadata” and “remove EXIF” are different searches. The home tool at Remove AI metadata opens on All metadata (strip-all), with AI only (AI provenance) one tap away. The privacy tool at Remove EXIF defaults to GPS and camera fields, and it also drops C2PA so a privacy pass does not leave a provenance manifest behind. This page is the combined how-to: look at both layers, pick a mode, and check the result.

Choose a mode on purpose

Mode Use it when What you should expect
AI provenance You care about C2PA, Content Credentials, and known AI hints, and you want to keep normal camera EXIF Provenance tags drop. GPS can remain. A social badge is not guaranteed gone
Privacy EXIF You care about location and device identity GPS, common EXIF / IPTC, XMP, and C2PA drop on the formats this tool edits
Strip all You want every detected category in the report removed EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, C2PA, and known AI text the scanner listed

The tool on this page starts in All metadata (strip-all) because the query is both layers. Switch the mode if you only want one of them. Pixel watermarks are on none of the rows. SynthID and TrustMark survive every mode.

Clean the file

1

Use a supported still

JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, and BMP. HEIC, HEIF, and AVIF are converted to a clean JPEG or PNG in your browser; GIF and BMP keep their format. PDF, DOCX, and video are not part of this cleaner. A screenshot is a new PNG or JPEG: inspect it if it is the file you will share, and expect it to have little or no original EXIF.

2

Read the before report

Category chips separate C2PA, AI, GPS, EXIF, and XMP. A file with only GPS is a privacy job. A file with C2PA and no GPS is a provenance job. A file with both needs strip-all or privacy mode if the map pin matters. How to read a quiet report is in how to check AI metadata.

3

Clean and verify in the same tab

Clean this file also re-scans the output. Do not download from memory of the before list. If an AI chip remains, the mode missed that category or the finding is not metadata this parser removes. Try strip-all once. If it remains after strip-all, treat it as outside the tool.

4

Share the download

AirDrop, email, and cloud drives will happily send the original if you pick the wrong thumbnail. Name the download (the tool appends -cleaned) and send that one. Uploading to Instagram afterward is the feed post or Story guide, not a second strip.

Where the bytes sit

Where metadata lives (main formats)

Format C2PA manifest EXIF / GPS AI text / XMP
JPEG APP11 / JUMBF segments; XMP pointers APP1 Exif APP1 XMP; IPTC APP13
PNG caBX chunk eXIf tEXt / iTXt / zTXt (e.g. parameters)
WebP C2PA / caBX-class RIFF chunks EXIF chunk XMP chunk

What each strip mode removes

Mode Removes Keeps (typical)
AI only (AI provenance) C2PA/JUMBF, Content Credentials XMP, AI DigitalSourceType, known AI PNG text Ordinary camera EXIF when it is not AI/C2PA-linked
EXIF / GPS (privacy) GPS, device/camera EXIF, common IPTC (+ C2PA by default) Pixels only — privacy-first pass
All metadata (strip all; home tool default) All detected EXIF / XMP / IPTC / C2PA categories in the report Image payload / structural chunks

Honest SynthID boundary

SynthID / TrustMark / soft-binding watermarks are not ordinary EXIF or C2PA metadata. Remove AI Meta does not claim pixel-watermark removal, “undetectable AI”, or guaranteed platform AI-label erasure. If Instagram still shows AI Info after a clean verify pass, the signal was not (only) file metadata.

HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, BMP: also handled in the browser. HEIC/HEIF and AVIF come back as a clean JPEG (PNG if transparent), TIFF as PNG or a cleaned TIFF, GIF and BMP stay in the same format (GIF keeps its animation). The page tells you which format you got. Video is not supported — still images only.

Technical C2PA detail, including JUMBF and caBX, lives on Remove C2PA. The privacy-only framing lives on Remove EXIF. You do not need both tools; the mode buttons drive the same engine. The separate URLs exist so a GPS search and a Content Credentials search do not land on one vague page. Generation tags on their own are the AI metadata cleaner. The comparison with AI Metadata Cleaner is the alternative page.

What cleaning metadata will not do

  • It will not remove a platform badge that Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok already attached to published media.
  • It will not remove SynthID, TrustMark, or other pixel watermarks.
  • It will not change pixels, resolution, or a filter baked into the image.
  • It will not clear a label that came from an in-app generative edit. See possible versus not.
Batch files. The free tool is one file at a time, which is the right pace for checking a report. Pro batch is a separate checkout for a ZIP of many files. The free path is enough to learn whether your images even contain the metadata you think they do.

If a social badge survives a clean verify, stop re-exporting and read why the AI info label stays.

Questions people ask

Does removing EXIF also remove an Instagram AI label?

EXIF and AI provenance are different metadata. Privacy mode on this tool also drops C2PA, but a platform badge can remain when the signal was never in the file.

Will AI provenance mode delete my GPS?

AI provenance mode targets C2PA and known AI metadata and leaves ordinary camera EXIF, including GPS, unless you choose Privacy EXIF or Strip all.
